What is brachial plexus?
The brachial plexus nerves are situated in the shoulder and upper arm. These nerves can be damaged in childbirth in a number of ways, including shoulder dystocia. Erb’s Palsy is also a related condition, as is Klumpke’s Paralysis (or Dejerine-Klumke Palsy).
Obstetric brachial plexus injuries are known as OBPI within the medical profession.
Many babies recover from brachial plexus injuries with no long lasting problems, but not all children are so lucky.
Of course, in many instances there is nothing more that the doctors or midwives could have done to prevent injury. However, in some instances preventable injuries occur, giving rise to the potential for a medical negligence claim.
